This session will highlight the current role of the poison centers in emergency preparedness and ongoing surveillance of trends in exposures to
hazardous and toxic substances by discussing the roles of the poison centers in recent events such as the H1N1 outbreak, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Fukushima Dia’ichi radiation release following the
tsunami, and surveillance at the national political conventions. We will discuss the purposes of the centers and the value of their services and will provide occupational medicine physicians with an understanding of how the poison centers can be of benefit.
