Cytokine-mediated surgical synthesis of bone is now a reality. Discovered over a quarter of a century ago, purified human BMP is now in clinical use. This method of bone reconstruction represents a paradigm shift for all disciplines concerned with absence of loss of craniofacial bone stock.

• Discuss mechanism of action of rhBMP-2: chemotaxis, population expansion and differentiation. 
• Understand management of the dental arch in cleft lip/palate surgery. 
• Learn maxillo-mandibular augmentation.
