The seminal “Sunstar Symposium” in 1997 introduced the term ‘periodontal medicine’ to periodontists and researchers worldwide. Since that time, there has been an exponential growth in research aimed at addressing the relationship between periodontal diseases and systemic health. Recent advances have been made in mechanistic, epidemiologic and clinical trial research and our knowledge of periodontal medicine has reached a new level.
