This presentation will highlight clinical concepts that have been learned and unlearned in non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy. Key therapeutic principles and approaches, ranging from antimicrobial therapy to surgical technique, are considered within the context of advancing technologies and developing evidencebased outcomes. A contemporary perspective is provided on the clinical implications of long-term treatment outcomes that suggest similar endpoints of therapy with non-surgical and surgical methods.

• Describe current understanding of the role mechanical debridement and plaque control on the success of periodontal therapy.
