Space is limited; attendance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Medical emergencies, possibly life-threatening, can and do occur in the periodontal office. The periodontist must be well prepared to prevent, recognize, and treat a wide variety of potential medical emergencies. Of course, prevention of these medical emergencies is of paramount importance. Since prevention isn’t always possible, there will be a significant discussion devoted to the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies in the periodontal office. Prevention, prompt recognition, and efficient management of medical emergencies by a well-prepared dental team can increase the likelihood of
a satisfactory outcome. The basic algorithm for managing all medical emergencies is consistent; that is, one algorithm fits all cases and all cases are worked through in the same organizational method each and every time. This adds consistency and predictability to a response to a medical emergency.

Educational Objectives:
• Discuss the “universal algorithm” for the treatment of medical emergencies.
• List the seven drugs that must be in all medical emergency kits.
• Discuss options for additional agents based on the type of sedation done in the office.
