As we prepare our residents for graduation, the educator must not only ensure that the graduate is prepared for the rigors of the “next day,” but also prepare them for the future of our profession. Newly graduated residents in Periodontics will also face the challenges of which practice model to follow. The goal of this Postdoctoral Directors and Educators Workshop will be to discuss the development of a curriculum and experience which will prepare our residents for either academic or clinical life one, five, and approximately ten years post-graduation, with a discussion of exploring the pros and cons of the multiple models our students are being exposed to. Attendees will also discuss the financial burdens facing residents, including average debt, amortization period, and how financial constraints affect the ability to secure a mortgage and/or a practice loan.
Educational Objectives:
• Discuss utilizing virtual meeting platforms to bring collaborative expertise to pre-doctoral and post-doctoral programs.
• Explore utilizing program and gaming to enhance the engagement and retention of periodontal knowledge.
• Develop educational strategies and techniques that can be used to increase interaction and application of periodontal material.
• Understand how haptic simulation is being utilized in periodontal education and its role in the future.
• Discover how periodontics programs are preparing their residents for the realities of practice ten years post-graduation.
• Explore various practice models which our graduates must choose.
• Understand, from first-hand accounts, the current realities of professional life 5-10 years after graduating from a Periodontics residency program, including the consequences of the financial burden undertaken to complete education.
• Develop tools that will help program directors and educators to better prepare residents for the realities of professional academic and clinical life
