23AAP-EV2: Pre, Peri and Post-operative Management of the Medically Compromised Patient
Speaker: Vishtasb Broumand
Treating medically compromised patients under anesthesia has become a regular occurrence in dental offices. In order to avoid emergencies and be prepared for management of medically compromised patients, we must be able to utilize monitoring equipment to evaluate the patient’s pre, peri and post-operative state and level of consciousness. Clinicians should also be prepared to recognize any possible developing emergencies in the dental environment and be able to provide management if and when emergency scenarios may develop.
Educational Objectives
• Be fully prepared for managing basic emergency scenarios while administering anesthesia to medically compromised patients.
• Know how to deploy emergency equipment and implement life saving/preserving measures.
• Understand the various types of intra-operative medical emergencies and their management for sedated patients.
• Understand your patients’ past and current medical history, their physiologic condition and state of mind: prevent treating a “stranger” when administering anesthesia.
• Work as a team with the office staff and other providers to prevent post-operative emergencies for the patients.
