23AAP-EV3: Dental Hygiene Symposium - Successful Management of the Periodontal Patient

The Dental Hygiene Symposium will provide an overview of several topics related to the successful management of the periodontal patient. This includes peri-implantitis pathophysiology and treatment, revolutionary approaches to curating integrative medical/dental partnerships, the role of soft tissue in long-term periodontal health and stability, and surgical treatments for soft tissue defects and deficiencies. The 2017 Disease Classification will also be revisited along with a discussion of implementation for optimal patient care. The Symposium will conclude with a panel discussion featuring all speakers providing the audience with a unique opportunity for Q&A.

Educational Objectives: 
• Understand the pathophysiology of peri-implantitis; recognize current treatment options; and grasp the fundamental importance of the dental hygienist in the prevention of peri-implantitis.
• Comprehend the impact that interdisciplinary care has in effective case selection, treatment presentation, and case acceptance; define implementation science and identify how this emerging discipline is focusing on complex treatment strategies; and learn how to create evidence-based, patient-centric clinical partnerships.
• Understand the critical role soft tissue plays in long-term periodontal health and stability; review surgical treatment for soft tissue defects and deficiencies as well as expected outcomes; and highlight the key role of dental hygienists in identifying soft tissue defects.
• Recognize the main categories of the 2017 classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions; understand the rationale and nuances of the new staging and grading system to classify periodontitis; and discuss the clinical relevance of the new classification for periodontitis.
