23AAP-NCE3: Palatal Expansion for the Periodontist

Speaker: Todd Scheyer

This course is important for todays’ periodontist focusing on collaborative care with other specialties, especially orthodontists. Utilizing maxillary skeletal expansion has been shown to be tremendously beneficial to help with difficult pediatric cases as well as maxillary deficient adult patients.  These therapies will not only improve patient function but can have a dramatic effect on their airway health.  By early implementation of maxillary expansion, we can dramatically change the growth and development trajectory for our patients.  Dr. Scheyer will discuss diagnosis and digital planning for maxillary skeletal expansion as well as how this treatment fits into the overall interdisciplinary approach towards airway focused digital dentistry.  Utilizing innovative techniques to facilitate expansion as well as adult tooth movement has been one of Dr. Scheyer’s passions.  This was recently displayed in a textbook publication focusing on surgically facilitate orthodontic therapy.  The future of Periodontics should hold Periodontists as the leaders on early diagnosis and implementation of such therapies as Maxillary Skeletal Expansion and Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy (SFOT).
