Program Track: Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, and Oral Diagnosis

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) joined forces to organize a World Workshop with the purpose of updating the previous classification of periodontal diseases and conditions from 1999 on the basis of contemporary evidence. This workshop, which was held in Chicago in November of 2017, congregated more that 120 experts in Periodontology and Oral Implantology from all over the world. The proceedings of the workshop translated into the publication in June 2018 of a new classification supported by 18 narrative or systematic reviews and four consensus reports. The new scheme involves some major changes, in particular a new classification system for periodontitis based on staging and grading. This presentation will be focused on addressing the rationale for this new system and its application in daily clinical practice.

Educational Objectives:

  • Recognize the main categories of the 2018 classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions
  • Know the main differences between the current and the previous classification from 1999
  • Comprehend the rationale and scientific evidence supporting the new staging and grading system to classify periodontitis
  • Discuss the application of the new classification of periodontitis using clinical examples
