Program Track: Periodontal and Systematic Interrelationships

Accumulating evidence suggests that human microbiome is deeply involved in our health and diseases. However, a causal relationship between periodontal disease and systemic health has not been clearly proven. This course will overview classical causal mechanisms of periodontitis for systemic diseases and emerging evidence for close association between oral microbiome and gut ecosystem which may be a key pathway for periodontal-systemic associations.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify systemic diseases which have a link to periodontal disease.
  • Demonstrate epidemiological data of periodontal medicine.
  • Consider how periodontal infection affects circulation.
  • Integrate latest knowledge about the role of gut microbiome in disease mechanisms and human and animal experiments of periodontitis into periodontal-systemic associations.
