Osteoporosis is a widespread crippling metabolic bone disease with major implications for the periodontal patient. This course will review the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, as well as current and future strategies for its medical management. An evidence-based approach will be used to help periodontists deal with the following complex issues in osteoporotic patients: diagnosis, periodontal risk assessment, management of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) and treatment planning for periodontal and implant procedures.
