This session is a continuation of the previous session. We previously discussed ways to increase patient comfort before the surgical procedure commences. This presentation will be a discussion of intra-operative methods of increasing patient comfort, IV (parenteral) moderate sedation. Better drug choices for periodontists and safer agents not typically considered will be addressed along with specific recommendations to improve patient comfort and improve patient safety.

Educational Objectives:

• Discuss the overall goals of IV Moderate sedation
• Describe the appropriate use of intra-operative opioids in IV moderate sedation
• List the safer and less safe opioids in IV moderate sedation
• Discuss some of the “adjunctive” agents available and their benefits and drawbacks
