The clinical signs and measures traditionally used for periodontal disease have not provided an accurate means by which to predict either current or future disease activity. Recent efforts have focused on developing diagnostic aids that would enable clinicians to assess disease activity, determine the immediacy for treatment, and evaluate the efficacy of treatment outcome and future prognosis. This program will look at the evolution of diagnostics with a focus on currently available methods.
