Program Track: Sedation and Anxiety ManagementModerator: Thiago MorelliSpeaker: Joseph A. Giovannitti, Jr.Periodontal training programs must now train residents for competency in moderate sedation techniques, and in 2016 the ADA revised their teaching and user guidelines for dentistry. This has prompted curricular changes that need to be implemented across programs. This lecture-based presentation will review the new ADA guidelines and discuss a curricular prototype for moderate sedation. In addition, emphasis will be placed on proper preanesthetic evaluation, the current state of moderate sedation in clinical practice, respiratory monitoring and airway management, and perioperative emergency management.Educational Objectives:• Develop a curriculum model for the training of periodontal residents in moderate sedation.• Perform a comprehensive preanesthetic evaluation.• Apply pharmacological and sedation principles and protocols to clinical practice.• Monitor respiratory status during sedation and manage obtunded airways.• Identify and treat common anesthetic-related emergencies.
